Our Story

Mission Statement

Our goal at Sonria Kitchen is to alleviate the pressures people, and families, feel when food allergies and intolerances are part of their lives by providing delicious, nutritious, lovingly prepared meals. There are enough things to worry about, we want you to get back to focusing on what really matters.

My Story

Our story starts in 2012 when my second son, Thomas, was born. When he was eight months old, we learned, the hard way, that Thomas is severely allergic to wheat and legumes, and later discovered his allergies to eggs and tree nuts. Not having any personal experience with food allergies, I struggled and fumbled my way through a complicated world of “allergy-friendly” foods because many of the gluten-free options contain soy or other allergens which Thomas must avoid. About a month after learning of Thomas’ allergies, we took a road-trip to visit family in Virginia. We stopped at the Delaware Welcome Center Travel Plaza to get lunch. As I sat there feeding Thomas a home-prepared meal, I noticed that, despite the host of food options available, there was not one restaurant where my entire family, including Thomas, could comfortably, and safely, enjoy a shared meal. In that moment, I began to formulate the business I wanted to create.

The more I researched, the more I realized what an odyssey it is to find a restaurant that can accommodate Thomas’ allergies. “Wouldn’t it be nice,” I mused, “if a place existed where everything were ‘allergy-friendly’ and Thomas could have a variety of exciting and delicious food choices other than a boring cheeseburger, no bun, or a bland piece of grilled chicken? Wouldn’t it be nice to relax during a meal instead of worrying about allergens cross-contaminating Thomas’ food?”

So much of our lives is centered on food, or sharing a meal with others. I want to teach families, that they don’t have to eat boring, bland food for the sake of the person with allergies. And, I want to help the busy parent who doesn’t have to the time to make every single item from scratch. I want people to know they can have complete, delicious experiences without worry or stress. I want to teach people that all the same foods they know and love can be modified to accommodate their allergy needs. Those “creature comforts,” your grandmother’s chicken-noodle soup, your Aunt’s savory boeuf bourguignon, your favorite bread recipe, can all be adapted to be just as delicious and comforting as always, but in a way that is safe for everyone.
